In 1978, when Dick Dufenhorst purchased 621 Main in Downtown Boise, Boise City Hall was not there. The Egyptian was closed. The Grove, Idaho Central Arena, Zion’s and most of the buildings that now dot the skyline of Downtown Boise had not even been conceived of yet. There was no “Strip” as we know it now. There was only one other bar, Pengilly’s, in the downtown area.
At that time, much of Downtown Boise had gone through urban renewal and the streets were littered with rebar, old torn up concrete, and there were open holes in the ground everywhere from the path of destruction in the name of “urban renewal”.
At the time of that purchase, 621 Main was a brothel, with poker downstairs and ‘rooms’ above.
Dick had the foresight to envision what Downtown Boise could look like, so he purchased the building, gutted it completely inside and out, and began construction on his unique signature brick arches. As part of his art and architecture, he laced farm implements, old tools, ship anchors and chains, and all kinds of other strange and wonderful items into his masonry designs.
Dufenhorst had constructed and owned several bars in Wisconsin, and brought the name, Humpin’ Hannah’s, with him from there.
Humpin’ Hannah’s mascot, Hannah, is a cocktail server who has a tray of beer and beverages that she is ‘humpin’ to the tables.
A second building next door was purchased in 1988, and Dufenhorst punched through the walls of that building and inserted his signature arches to combine the two buildings into Hannah’s as it is known today. The art and masonry of Dick’s creations throughout the establishment give Hannah’s its distinctive architectural feel and design.
Featuring live music for 45 years and still doing so, Hannah’s is unique in that regard within the current nightclub scene. The Rocci Johnson Band continues to pack the house with Johnson’s wild antics and stage shows three nights a week, enjoying lines of anxious fans down the block every weekend.
Come on in and celebrate 45 years of a beautiful, successful nightclub, whose employees and many longtime customers are like family. Great entertainment, a free buffet, drink specials, camerading and celebrating all night at one of Idaho’s finest nightclubs?! What more could you want?
