Traffic Crash Victims Demand Solutions to Speeding Epidemic
On Sunday, November 21st, families of traffic crash victims and street safety advocates will gather on the Idaho State Capitol steps on Jefferson Street to commemorate World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
This event is one of hundreds happening across the country and around the world.
Traffic violence is an epidemic which we already have a vaccine for. But an approach to roadway design which values moving traffic above saving lives, and the rise of trucks and SUVs whose size and power present a growing threat to pedestrians and bicyclists, has made local, state and national Vision Zero goals of eliminating traffic deaths elusive at best.
Participants will bring attention to complacency around speeding and call for speed management solutions, including lower speed limits, safe street design and automated enforcement.
During the ongoing pandemic, public health agencies across the country have proven they are capable of acting quickly to protect people’s lives. We know we have the capacity to take dramatic measures in the name of safety. What’s missing is the political will.
