Join us for a presentation by Stella Sammaripa “Qéemu Revitalization and Nimipuutímt.” Stella will discuss how she initially created this project to fulfill her College Capstone, but in the end she created a connection through indigenous knowledge and modern technology in order to regain sustainability on her homelands. She started my project by building a map from ancestral knowledge of name-places, which is culturally sensitive, and then created a habitat suitability model through ArcGIS in order to rebuild populations of Qéemu (Indian Dogbane) on the Nez Perce Reservation.
Stella currently is still working on her project even after gaining her bachelors degree in Native Environmental Sciences for her work. She has five children, two huskies and her husband, Lonnie Jo Sammaripa Jr. She resides in Kamiah, ID where she worked on her Bachelors degree in Native Environmental Science through distance learning from Northwest Indian College. She also works for the Nez Perce Tribe’s Language Program as the Language Technician for Kamiah; in which she teaches to the surrounding community her indigenous language, Nimipuutímt.
