Never heard of silver metal clay? The name comes from the method, which is akin to hand-building ceramic clay, but the material itself contains only finely powdered silver particles in a water-holding base. “Metal clay” paradoxically produces jewelry that is solid metal.

Dip your toe into the myriad metal clay techniques with this
intermediate class where we will build a pendant with your choice
of textures, ornamented with a silver flower with a sparkly Cubic
zirconia in the center. We’ll also make a bail on the back side for
hanging. We’ll fire the pieces in a kiln, then polish and add patina.
You’ll leave with ready to wear necklace on an adjustable leather
cord. Those with a little metal clay experience are best positioned
to benefit from this class. If however you have zero knowledge of metal clay, take heart! With patience, beginners can succeed with this project.

There are myriad jewelry techniques for making silver pendants, but the advantage of using the “metal clay” method is its suitability for impressions of textures. We will discuss how shrinkage during the firing process affects the pendant and how to adjust for that. We will learn how to make textured strips and cut them to size. We will learn how to sculpt a three-dimensional flower whose center is made by wet setting a fireable cubic zirconia in a ball of clay. We will also talk about kiln firing versus torch firing and the advantages of each.
