Dia de los Muertos or better known as the "Day of the Dead" has its roots in indigenous Mesoamerican culture dating back over 3000 years. This celebration was traditionally held at the beginning of summer to coincide with the time of year when all life was in full bloom. However, with the colonization of Mexico by the Spanish, the holiday was gradually moved to the fall to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saint's Day and All Souls Day. During the festival, natives gave thanks and offerings to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the "Lady of the Dead" who was queen of the underworld. Natives did this in hopes that she would show favor to the living and watch over the bones of the dead to keep them safe.
