Medicare turned 52 at the end of July and Social Security is celebrating its 82nd year of providing financial security and retirement dignity for seniors on the 14th of August. We will be celebrating these milestones on the Capitol steps August 12th at 12:00pm. Medicare has provided affordable comprehensive medical coverage for seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and children for more than half a century. In providing a financial support system for seniors, Social Security has never defaulted on a payment, and the checks have never been late in 82 years. This has been done with less than 1% in administrative costs. I am pretty sure that there is no private enterprise that can make the same claims. It is also self-funding and does not impact the national budget as many politicians would have you believe. It is not broke and it is completely solvent well into the future. Both of these programs are under attack in this country and it is important that we do all we can to protect and even expand what they do and have done for most of our lives. It is apparent at this time that our generation is the first generation in the history of this country that is not going to leave the next generation with a country that is better off than it was when we inherited it. One of the ways that we can make sure that they will have a chance to improve things for themselves and the next generation is to protect and even expand Social Security and Medicare.
