State of Confusion, aka SOC, was a Boise, Idaho, hardcore punk band from 1984 to 1988. They distinguished themselves from contemporary hardcore bands through their lyrics around environmental concerns about rapidly diminishing wilderness, complex political takes on the current issues of the times, and being anti-asshole generally. The music was played at blistering speeds but also retained rock and metal influences, especially Black Sabbath. Live shows were intense and in your face, with singer Pat "Brown" Schmaljohn (RIP) leaping high into the air and whipping audiences into a frenzy. The boys are at it again in 2023, with old friend and one-time SOC member Troy Wright on vocal duties while the OG band members belt out the music of their youth with renewed vigor and passion.
