Comedian Andie Main guides you through her journey from a punk-rock coke dealer to an alcoholic stand-up comic, and eventually to a sober, disabled yoga teacher. In her words: “I didn’t go to college. I didn’t make babies. But I did sell drugs to famous musicians.” Along the way, she shares her experiences with bullying in the comedy world, how to practice yoga with a fused spine, and what it means to grow into the person you were meant to be. It’s as gut-wrenching as it is gut-busting.
Organized around the seven chakras, Cocaine Yogi blends dark comedy with spiritual insight. Main quotes the late spiritual guru Ram Dass and opens the show with a brief introduction to the ancient Indian practice of yoga—though the audience is only asked to participate in a few optional deep breaths. She recounts her path to sobriety, the challenges of living with ankylosing spondylitis, and the humor found in unexpected places. As she puts it: “I found out at the ripe old age of 43 that yoga is the only thing I can do that will prevent further decay of my spine that I can afford.”
