Watercolor: From Flow to Form
A 4-Week Creative Watercolor Series
This isn't a traditional paint-along watercolor class.
Instead of everyone working toward the same finished painting, we'll spend four Saturdays learning what watercolor can do, experimenting with techniques, and discovering how those techniques fit into your way of making art.
Each session follows three simple ideas:
FOUNDATION — Learn it.
We'll begin with approachable demonstrations and techniques that give you the skills and understanding to get started.
CHALLENGE — Push it.
We'll take what we've learned a little further through creative prompts, problems to solve, and opportunities to work outside your usual habits.
EXPLORE — Make it yours.
This is where there are no step-by-step instructions. Change the colors. Choose a different subject. Go abstract. Tear it apart. Combine techniques. Follow an unexpected idea and see where it takes you.
Week 1 | Let Watercolor Be Watercolor
Explore water, pigment, washes, edges, color mixing, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. We'll experiment with both controlling watercolor and allowing it to do the wonderfully unpredictable things watercolor does best.
Week 2 | Finding Shape
We'll explore layers, transparency, value, negative space and composition. Learn how to simplify what you see and build an image without feeling like you have to paint every detail.
Week 3 | Take It Apart
We're going to make beautiful watercolor paintings—and then tear them up! Using painted papers, we'll explore deconstructed watercolor collage, composition, shape, texture and creative problem-solving.
Week 4 | Make It Yours
Bring everything together in an open-studio-style final session. Choose your subject, techniques and direction while receiving guidance along the way. The goal isn't to make a "perfect" watercolor painting. It's to make something that feels like you.
Who is this series for?
Everyone.
If you've never picked up a watercolor brush, you'll learn the foundations you need to begin with confidence.
If you've been painting for years, you'll be challenged to experiment, loosen up, break a few habits, and approach watercolor differently.
You don't need to know your style. You don't need to be "good at art." You just need to be willing to try.
