Join us for a presentation on basket weaving from Leanne Campbell. Leanne will discuss and demonstrate the process and materials of basket weaving and connect it to traditional ways of knowing and ethnomathematics. She will take us on a journey through the uses that been passed down from generation to generation. Brief Q & A to follow.

Leanne Campbell is an enrolled member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe or Schitsu’umsh – meaning “Those who were found here” or “The Discovered People.” Her lineage also includes the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and the Nez Perce Tribe.
Leanne earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Museum Studies with a minor in Studio Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Leanne is an established and practicing artist. She has been a dedicated practitioner of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s traditional arts through tireless study, her own artwork, and workshops designed to share her art and knowledge. Campbell’s efforts have left their mark. Her works as an artist have been showcased several times at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, Spokane, WA and other local galleries. Leanne was a recipient of Seattle, Washington’s Burke Museum Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Native Art Visiting Researcher Grant. She is a 2019 recipient of the Idaho State Historical Society Esto Perpetua Award. The award takes its name from the state’s motto, “let it be perpetual.” This is one of the highest awards given in the State of Idaho for those who work to safeguard Idaho’s history and cultural heritage. She has received many other prestigious awards.
Leanne is currently a full-time student at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico pursuing her master’s degree. She is enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts in Cultural Administration (MFACA) program with a minor in Arts Administration. She is expected to graduate in 2024.
