Starting Monday, June 30th, Water Bear Bar—Boise’s beloved queer-owned cocktail and oyster lounge—will host weekly King of Drag watch parties at 7 p.m., led by local drag king and Mascs 4 Mimosas co-creator Micah Wish. The event is free and open to the public, with donations encouraged at the door. All proceeds go directly to support Water Bear’s ongoing crowdfunding campaign aimed at keeping the venue open beyond this fall.

But this isn’t just a watch party. It’s a rallying cry.

“Water Bear isn’t just a bar. It’s a rare, lesbian-owned queer space where our community gathers safely, authentically, and creatively,” says Micah Wish. “Hosting a King of Drag watch party here isn't just timely—it’s revolutionary. Drag kings have long been overlooked in mainstream drag culture, and now, as we claim overdue visibility on national stages, support at the local level matters more than ever, especially when our queer venues are under threat. When we all come together we’re not just watching history, we’re making it; and that is powerful."

King of Drag, the groundbreaking new reality competition series, is the first of its kind to center drag kings, a vital but often overlooked segment of the drag community. For Boise, where drag kings have historically taken a backseat to their more visible sisters, the show’s debut couldn’t be more timely—or more personal.

Water Bear Bar, known for its intimate vibe, award-worthy cocktails, and sustainability-minded oyster offerings, launched its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign earlier this summer with a goal of raising $100,000. The campaign seeks to cover operating costs and ensure the bar remains a vital part of downtown Boise’s cultural fabric.

“This isn’t just about a bar. It’s about protecting joy, identity, and community in a place that desperately needs it,” the Indiegogo campaign description says.

The watch party series will include King of Drag Swag giveaways, special guests, and community Q&As after each episode. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their finest drag king looks or just come as they are.
