Start your morning off with a thoughtful conversation over coffee between our bookseller Kvothe and Dr. James Canton about his new book, The Oak Papers.

This is a book about one man's encounter with an ancient tree, the Honywood Oak. For two years, James Canton sat beneath the majestic tree, embarking on a journey of solitude and exploration of the natural world—and our connection to it—emerging with a unique view on human existence. The Oak Papers invites the reader to discover a fascinating re- awakening, an incredible awareness of nature, and just how deeply entwined our roots really are. “We still lean on oak trees. In ways we do not fully understand, we need them.”

Dr. James Canton runs the Wild Writing MA at the University of Essex and is the author of Ancient Wonderings and Out of Essex: Re-Imagining a Literary Landscape, which was inspired by his rural wandering in East Anglia. He was awarded his PhD by the University of Essex and reviews for the Times Literary Supplement, Caught by the River, and Earthlines. Canton is a regular on British television and radio and lectures frequently. He lives in Essex, England.

"This is a profound meditation on the human need for connection with nature, as one man seeks solace beneath the boughs of an ancient oak tree. The tree and its surrounds come to life in shimmering detail, and Canton's writing has an exquisite, somewhat dreamlike quality"
— Peter Wohlleben, author of The Hidden Life of Trees
