Betty Hayzlett is a local legend, an artist who effortlessly juggles multiple creative roles. Her unique felted bowls and orbs are abstract, yet lifelike, and seem to pulse with energy. Her vibrant, textural wall hangings become three- dimensional masterpieces, irresistibly inviting viewers to reach out and touch them. In her latest creative venture, Hayzlett masterfully blends two unlikely materials: clay and wool. This bold experiment results in ceramic pieces enhanced with felted elements, creating an “Unexpected Harmony.” Hayzlett aims to craft striking contrasts by merging felting with ceramics, preserving the vibrant colors and rich textures that define her work, while allowing patterns to play a more prominent role. “Unexpected Harmony” showcase’s Hayzlett’s ability to transform ordinary materials into extraordinary art.

Hayzlett’s journey with fabric began in childhood, inspired by a friend’s mom who taught her to make doll clothes. Her passion for fiber art began in college, where she created a striking final project using fabric over a metal armature. A weaving class further fueled her excitement for the rich textures and vibrant colors that fibers can create. However, Hayzlett soon discovered that the rigid lines of loom-woven fabric couldn’t fully express her love for three-dimensional and organic forms. This realization led her to explore new techniques and materials, allowing her to bring her artistic visions to life in more dynamic and innovative ways.

Hazlett creates art to make beautiful pieces that visually improve their surroundings. She loves playing with contrasts: light and dark, matte and shiny, smooth and rough, hard and soft. “ I don’t think of anything being out of bounds,” says Hayzlett. "In my work, which is mostly abstract in nature, I use contrast to create interest and to try to get the observer to interact and enjoy the richness that this creates. Although I have experimented with materials such as wood, from rough slabs and smooth carvings, to twigs of all sizes, it is only in the last three years that I have turned to ceramics to help create contrast".
