The Vanishing West
“Nothing illustrates pure compassion like a black and white photograph. Void of any colorful influence, the black and white image stands on its own. In my black and white work the viewer is faced with stark impressions of the American landscape. Each image is barren, isolated and factual.”
“In this work I paint two works beside each other. The works on the right are painted using my dominant right hand, to paint trees from my sketchbook. The paintings on the left are painted using my left hand, with an abstract approach. Painting with my left hand is like having a new tool in the studio. I use the same colors, and find simultaneous connections of line and form between the two. I constantly think of the bridge between each piece and the push and pull that happens. While they remain solely unique and opposing, they can truly be side by side.”
“This work expresses my joy of physical entities and environments. As virtual technologies grow,
these sculptures underscore an analogue flow of existence. I use digital processes such as 3D scanning, printing, and CNC machines combined with tradition processes such as modeling, carving, and lost-wax bronze casting to make these physical objects. The finished sculptures show evidence of digital intervention but emphasize the physicality of form and material. They provide the viewer a preverbal experience with a physical entity that may also elicit general feelings of growth and potential. I hope these sculptures evoke a sense of growing from an interaction of natural forces and human intention.”
